The kids and I were involved in an auto accident yesterday on our way to pick up Aaron from work in downtown, Atlanta. We are heading out now to a rental car company to pick up a car that has been provided by the person who hit us or their insurance. And hopefully we’ll be back on the road again later today. This is the rental car that we’ve been given. It’s spacious on the inside. The kids and I are all buckled up now, and we are ready to go. Next step is dealing with the appraisal on our damaged car. Aaron and I took pictures yesterday of the damage done to this car. We sent it over to the insurance company. And because they felt like they couldn’t tell for sure what the extent of the damage was, they are having our car towed now to a place where it can be fully inspected by an appraiser. Because there is a possibility that this car might be totaled out because of the type of damage that it received and also really, just because the car is so old… they weren’t able to tell me exactly what amount they would offer us if the car was deemed totaled. I guess they’d have to look at the specific car before they can make an assessment like that So instead of having our car taken to a body shop this vehicle will be taken to a salvage yard and then if they decide that they are going to total out the car, we will have the option of either taking the amount that they give us and getting our car back anyway or letting them keep the car in the salvage yard and taking the amount that they give us to pay what we actually owe left on the car. Even though our Acura is an older vehicle. It’s a 2004 model. We had our home foreclosed on before we got this car and so the loan has been a terrible. We’ve had this loan for seven years, and we do still owe on the car. I’m not sure exactly what the amount is so… it’ll be interesting to see if they do total out the car, if the amount that they offer us is equal to the amount that we owe. There’s also a chance that once our car is towed to the salvage yard and it’s appraised, the estimate for the damage might actually come to less than what the value of the car is. At that point the insurance company will pay to have our car towed to a body shop of our choosing, they will cut us a check, and then we will use that check to pay to repair the damages. Since I’m not sure if the tow truck is going to come today (Friday) or on Monday, I’m cleaning out the car And we’re gonna put the key to the car under the mat on the driver’s side so that if we aren’t here, the tow truck will be able to take the car. And I’m really hoping that that is going to be today! And the tow truck is here There she goes So today is Thursday. It is the 19th of April. Our accident was on the 11th, which was last Wednesday. I called today to find out if they had done the estimate, if our car was still at the salvage yard, kind of what to expect next. And I was told that the estimate was actually completed on the 17th. So I don’t know if I missed a call or what happened. I’m glad I followed up today They aren’t able to keep the car at the salvage yard without having to pay for that storage fee So it was really a good thing that I called them back to find out what the next step is. The car is not being totaled so we are going to have the car towed to a repair shop, and then Aaron and I are gonna go over to that repair shop with the kids tonight and kind of talk with the guys there, the mechanics there, because my understanding is that even though an estimate was prepared for us, there could be additional mechanical damage. So I’m really new to this whole process and on the estimate that I was emailed…I asked, I requested a copy of the estimate so I could go and talk to these people and say: This is what I believe is wrong, what do you think? And on that estimate sheet the parts that they were giving me an estimate for all said refurbished or reused. So, I’m not really sure what to do with that. But we’re gonna learn a little bit more when we go to the repair shop today, the paint and body shop. And I’ll let you guys know we find out. Today is Friday, April 27th, Aaron and I were expecting to go and pick up our repaired car today, but instead we got a call from the body shop saying that they have found additional damage. And they have asked us to come and bring the copy of our paperwork from the insurance company detailing out what their assessment of the damage was so we are quickly heading there now as a family and after this we hope to find out what the additional damage is and how State Farm is going to be covering that. We are back at the body shop today, and this is what our damaged fender looks like. More damage was found so we aren’t going to be able to pick her up today, but hopefully we’ll find out soon what the mechanical damage is, and then we’ll be able to come back and get her when she’s all repaired. Today is Wednesday May 2nd. I got the call this morning that our Acura is ready. Mom is giving us lift there and we’re gonna pick it up now. We have our car back things went so smoothly Friday we got word that there was more damage done to the car than we initially thought. So we’ve had the car here for a couple of additional days. Now, I don’t have to deal with the insurance company anymore. We just have to return the rental car. The gas price today in my area is $2.67. If I had prepaid the gas, it would have been $2.39. Lesson learned. The car is back in our driveway now. It looks amazing. They washed it and polished it and repaired it. It is in fantastic condition, and we are super excited to have our car back Wow! Look at the headlights. He literally cleaned up the headlight for us, too. When the tow truck came to take the car to the salvage yard, I did not have them keep the screws. So we are going to have to figure out what size screw we need to put our license plate back on. But other than that she’s ready to go. Even though she looks all pretty, and we’re excited to have her back, we’re gonna put her into use immediately. Now we’ll be able to tear down the toilet inside of the bus and remove all of the pieces of the bins that we took out. So I’m really excited about getting the car back. Any thoughts that you have on advice you would give people after they’ve been in an accident on getting their car repaired and getting things back…and how to navigate it? I would say just move on the phone calls right away. Don’t sit on anything and definitely don’t assume that anyone’s doing something for you when they say they are because you never know. Like, you know… for these people everything moves on and they could be totally thinking about your problem or your repair or whatever it is. And then literally the next day it’s another world for them. They don’t, they don’t think about it. So just stay on things.
