I’m Barbara Leonard, President and CEO of the Maine Health Access Foundation In a week with bad news and power outages all over the state and nation, I’m here today to give you good news. The Affordable Care Act is still the law. That means that thousands and tens of thousands of people can still sign up for insurance for 2018. We know how important insurance is to everyone in Maine. The Marketplace is open for business. There have been many voices over the past few months coming from Washington, some accurate, some not so. The only way to be sure of what you know is available and what the cost will be to you is to call. Do not put off the call. 523-5045. It will take 5 minutes. In Cumberland County the Opportunity Alliance is an organization that will help. Our services are free. We are unbiased. We don’t work for insurance companies. Our job is to help you. We will help you figure out the best plan for you. If you don’t reenroll, you may not get all the benefits you are entitled to. You need to update your income and look at the plans to see what’s most effective for you. What you will find are volunteer navigators who will help you figure out the best product and what the cost will be. Because of the various policy changes in Washington, it’s really important that everyone sign up for insurance. Check the plans. Don’t just keep the plan from last year. Some people may be able to obtain bronze plans at essentially no cost this year. Check that out. There’s coverage. There’s help at healthcare.gov online. Get help at community action programs like Opportunity Alliance and others throughout the state plus hospitals, health care providers, and federally qualified health centers. There are people who can help you sign up. Insurance is available. Even if you get a letter from your insurance company telling you that your plan is going to cost more money, don’t panic. The amount in these letters are often inaccurate and you won’t have to pay as much as it says. We are very concerned with the shortened enrollment period from November 1 to December 15 this year that some people fall through the cracks. They may have waited later to enroll in the past. Do not delay. Our appointments are filling up. Please call us. Get out there and get enrolled.
