It all started when I was back in university.
I wanted to take something that was outdoors and I wanted to do
something that I could work for myself. I went on a practicum and went on an
oyster farm and by the end of the day, I knew I was hooked and that was
the kind of the career I wanted to follow. For the last 20 years I’ve been pursuing it.
It was being able to work for myself, being on a boat and just the natural
setting. It’s a really cool food product; it’s 100% sustainable and I could really
get behind it and I’ve enjoyed the challenges of growing the oysters.
I think the best part of my day is coming around the corner into the
narrows, and the mist in the mountains coming down onto the water
and rolling up on the farm and it’s something that I’ve built.
There’s nothing that could describe that and just the beauty of this area, that just
lures me in. It’s an amazing part of our our business and to be able to call
this my office, yeah I can’t think of anything I’d rather be doing.
I go to work every day I enjoy what I do, I enjoy the challenges the struggles that
come along with it. The biggest thing in our business with risk is being very
diversified, so we have oyster farms in six geographical regions on the coast.
So if one area is closed we always have an area to pull product from. We do about
300,000 lbs of clams a year and for oysters we’re usually shipping around four to six thousand dozen oysters a week, and we ship 52 weeks of the year.
The regulations are getting stiffer and stiffer for our business for providing
safe quality shellfish to the market and that’s why we’re heavily investing in
our processing plants, our wet storage facilities and the way we handle
our products going to market. The relationship with Island Savings has
been amazing. It’s very simple, it’s very easy for me; it’s great having a relationship
where they understand my business and allow me to do what I need to do
and they take care of all my insurance. I think the hardest part with
insurance is always having a new face, always having to explain what we do and
try to educate people on all of the different facets of our business and
with Island Savings, I’ve always had a great relationship and I don’t have to
go through that process every time we’re renewing or looking for some new coverage. One part of being really successful
for your members and as a business is truly knowing and understanding
what your member does. So just having a conversation over the phone
sometimes isn’t enough. Seeing that first-hand is really
essential to making sure that I’m covering my member making sure all
their needs are looked after. Even when we were building our new processing plant,
she was down in the dirt having a look and seeing what we do.
It’s great having these partnerships. I’m just excited for Evening Cove and their next
steps for his future, because I know he’s got lots of projects on the go and I’m
more excited that I get to be a part of that and see where we can take that for them. Our role as Andrew’s insurance broker
is to make sure that we intimately understand his business,
that we’ve worked hand-in-hand with risk mitigation strategies to prevent a loss
in the first place, but should one ever occur we’ll be out here helping Andrew rebuild and get
back up and running as quickly as possible. We think it’s a very critical component
for the success of any business when our advisors take the time to provide
the right options and just make sure that the risk is covered and our business people
are thinking that far in advance because if not, having an insurance claim
and not having the right coverage could be devastating to their business. Everything out here is insured. Everything floating.
