Because there are so many different companies and products out there that it can be difficult to choose the right one. That’s when an insurance broker comes into it. They do all the legwork for you to find out which is the right policy for you. So they’ll look at your business, your income, your lifestyle and find the right insurance solution to make sure you have everything you need covered. So let’s go chat to an insurance broker now to find out why they chose that career. For those who don’t already know, insurance is the swapping of risk from a person or a business to an insurance company in exchange for a payment. So it’s the insurance broker’s job to read all those policies and help you to understand them. Today we’re talking to Wayde Knight from Knightcorp to find out why he chose to be an insurance broker. Wayde! Jesse. Welcome. Mate, I want to learn about insurance broking. You my guy? Absolutely. You’ve come to the right place. Cool! Come on through. All right, mate. So, first up – What exactly does an insurance broker do? An insurance broker is the middleman between the insurance company and the customer. So we meet with our customers; we learn their insurance risks and we’ll go to the insurance companies and we’ll place them for them and make sure it’s done very well. Cool. And so why did you choose to become an insurance broker? I got into insurance, because I really enjoy the sales aspect, the negotiating, working with people, and coming up with the solutions. It’s very challenging and extremely rewarding. Now I imagine there’s a lot of reading documents and that sort of stuff. But what else is there to the job? Yes. Reading documents is a big part of it, but we really need to get to understand our customers. So day to day we’re out with them, learning their businesses, learning their lifestyles, making sure that we know everything that we need to to be able to make sure the insurance is doing what it needs to do. And you mentioned it can be a bit difficult. What is the most challenging part of the job? Getting to understand the clients and really getting inside their businesses and their lives, their lifestyles, knowing what it is that they’re doing, because normally the customer doesn’t even know what they need insured. We’ve got to tell them. Now on the other hand… What’s the best part of the job? The best part – building the relationships and having fun along the way. Insurance is a very professional and serious industry – very high stress but on the other side of it, when you work hard, you get to play hard as well. And have a bit of fun with our customers. So that’s what it’s all about. So why do you think that this is such a great career? Well, insurance is one of those things where you’re never dealing with the same person or the same business or the same risk. So it’s very diverse and I love that aspect of it. You get to speak to different people every day, learn different things and come up with different solutions. Whether it’s talking to your local fish and chip shop or dealing with a major airline or the skyline buildings in the city. They all need insurance and we’re involved in that. So it’s great. Mate, now it’s time for the edge. Are you ready? I’m ready. All righty. So what characteristics does someone need to be an insurance broker? You’ve got to be a good communicator. You’ve got to have high energy. You’ve got to be patient and a quick learner. That’ll get you through. OK, secondly. So from school to now, how does someone get to where you are? I would recommend you either go and do a TAFE course, get a diploma in banking, business, finance – one of those. Or contact one of the industry associations and go through some of the training courses. They will get you into a firm and you can get started. And lastly, could you give me one piece of advice for someone thinking about getting into insurance broking? My best advice would be – Don’t wait. If you want to get into insurance, do it as soon as you can, because if you make that decision and you commit to it, you’ll have no regrets. It is fantastic. Awesome. Cheers, Wayde. My pleasure. How about a game of pool? After you. All right. Oh, well. That’s that. If you’re a people person and good with numbers, and Wayde is obviously better than me, then maybe insurance broking is the career for you.
